Everyone has their critiques. We start forming likes & dislikes from an acutely early age. Some of our evaluations are formed based upon our own experiences and others we form based on what we hear from the people around us. Children readily pick up what the adults around them are saying. This is the reason most family members belong to the exact same political party & practice the exact same religion; it's what they grew up with. A fantastic deal of what we value comes from what we were exposed to as kids. Now and then we find that we change our opinion on some-thing once we have experienced it for our-selves because the opinion was based on what we were taught rather than from personal experience.

In the family I grew up in my dad liked to have things quiet. He worked quite hard at his job and running a farm so when he sat down for the evening he didn't like a whole lot of noise or activity going on around him. We could have the tv on low or he would put on albums of classical music. It was the only music he would listen to. If we had the radio on & country-western music, even country wedding songs, or rock and roll would come on he would tell us to turn it off. He didn't understand rock & roll & he thought country-western music was hokey, even the love ballads and country wedding songs. I was exposed to rock & roll through my friends, radio and dances and like it. I did not listen to western-country music at all. I held my dad's opinion of it. Then I started a dating a young man in college that listened to country-western music at all times. He liked the beat of the music and the stories that the majority of of the songs told.

I really liked him so when we started dating I put up with the music and tuned it out. We then went to a large out-of-doors music show that featured numerous of the hottest country western bands. From that point on I was hooked. I discovered that I also liked the stories the songs told & the music was amusing to dance to. At the outdoor concert event I met numerous of my boyfriend's friends. They taught me how to line-dance to some of the songs. I slow-danced to some ballads and country wedding songs. After college I moved to another city and so I lost touch with my boyfriend. In time I married my present husband and we're raising our family. I still listen to all versions of music, but every time I hear country western music I think back to that concert & how I came to appreciate it. I aim to let my children experience many different things growing up & try not to influence their opinions.
